Improving Mobile Network Coverage in Herford District

The Herford district is taking steps to enhance mobile network coverage, aiming to promote digital education, safe work, and reduce unnecessary trips, as stated by Birgit Rehberg, head of the department for district development and climate protection.

According to the latest data available in the Geoportal under "Life & Living" or directly at this link, 11% of the district's land area are "gray spots", areas covered by at least one, but not all network providers with 4G or 5G. District Administrator Jürgen Müller considers mobile network measurements an important issue, considering mobile communication essential infrastructure.

In an effort to address these gray spots, companies in the Herford district have equipped their waste collection vehicles with measuring devices from ENQT GmbH for mobile network feed measurements. These measurements will be conducted regularly in the future. While over 98% of the land area in North Rhine-Westphalia is covered by at least one network provider with 4G or 5G, there are still gaps, with 1.4% of the land area currently not covered by either 4G or 5G, known as "white spots".

Jan Ahring, mobile manager at the district of Herford, clarified that the data was collected several months ago and reflects the supply status for the year 2024. He also mentioned that the data will be collected regularly in the future to get as up-to-date a picture as possible.

The basic data on mobile network coverage at the level of districts and independent cities in North Rhine-Westphalia is updated quarterly in the dashboard at www.mobilfunk.nrw based on the data from the Federal Network Agency's mobile monitoring.

For Jürgen Müller, improving connectivity and communication is not just about comfort, but about participation and sustainability. Mobile communication is relevant for economic growth, making education more accessible, and crucial for emergency communication. Closing dead zones is a step towards a more connected and sustainable future for the Herford district.
