OMV Launches Europe's Largest Green Hydrogen Plant; Infineon Austria Completes Transition
OMV, an Austrian energy company, has launched a pioneering project to produce green hydrogen on a massive scale. The project, initiated within the H2Pioneer research programme, aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions. Meanwhile, Infineon Technologies Austria has successfully transitioned to using green hydrogen at its Villach site.
The H2Pioneer project, started by OMV on August 20, 2025, involves building one of Europe's largest green hydrogen plants. The company invested 686 million euros in research and development to achieve this. The project is supported by the European Hydrogen Bank and is part of the FTI-Initiative's Showcase Region Energy programme, funded by the Climate and Energy Fund.
The plant uses a state-of-the-art 2-MW PEM electrolyzer, which supplies the production with process gas around the clock. This electrolyzer produces hydrogen with a purity of 99.999999 percent, ensuring high-quality output.
In parallel, Infineon Technologies Austria has completed its switch to green hydrogen at its Villach site on the same date. The company, which achieved a turnover of 4.8 billion euros in the 2024 financial year with 5,977 employees, now covers its entire semiconductor production demand with the 290 tons of hydrogen produced annually by the electrolyzer.
The successful implementation of these projects marks a significant step towards a greener future. OMV's large-scale green hydrogen production and Infineon Austria's transition to using this clean energy source demonstrate the potential of hydrogen in reducing carbon emissions and driving sustainable development.
