Odisha Imposes 48-Hour Internet Ban in Cuttack After Violent Durga Puja Clashes
The Odisha government has imposed a 48-hour internet and social media suspension in major parts of Cuttack city following violent clashes during Durga Puja idol immersion processions. The restrictions, which began on Saturday, aim to prevent the spread of 'provocative and inflammatory messages' on social media platforms.
The unrest began late Friday night in the Dargha Bazaar area over loud music during a Durga Puja immersion procession. At least half a dozen people, including Cuttack Deputy Commissioner of Police Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo, were injured in the initial clashes. The restrictions apply to the entire Cuttack Municipal Corporation area, Cuttack Development Authority region, and 42 Mauza areas that witnessed heightened tension following the clashes.
Authorities have arrested six individuals and are examining CCTV footage, drone visuals, and eyewitness accounts to identify additional suspects. Despite the violence, immersion ceremonies in Bhubaneswar were proceeding peacefully with elaborate police arrangements in place, with five immersion sites established across the city. Additional Police Commissioner Narsingh Bholo confirmed comprehensive security arrangements for the processions, with officers deployed even on rooftops. However, fresh clashes on Sunday afternoon injured six police officials and some media personnel.
The Odisha government's internet suspension and enhanced security measures aim to maintain peace during the Durga Puja celebrations. Authorities are working to identify and apprehend those responsible for the violence. The restrictions cover mobile internet, broadband, and all online messaging platforms, including WhatsApp, Facebook, X, Instagram, and Snapchat. The situation is being closely monitored, and updates will be provided as necessary.
