Nigerian Administration Laments Insufficient Support for Homegrown Goods

In a bid to boost Nigerian-made products, the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NAASENI) has pinpointed several contributing issues, including affordability and public perception.

During a meeting with stakeholders in Akure, capital of Ondo State, Joseph Alasoluyi, Deputy Director of Engineering at NAASENI,admitted that Nigerians tend to gravitate towards foreign goods instead of local alternatives. However, a silver lining emerges as NAASENI has been instrumental in training over 50 individuals in the production of homegrown artefacts to drive local support.

To shed light on its role, Alasoluyi explained that NAASENI’s mission embraces science, technology, and engineering as fundamental pillars of Nigeria‘s development. Operating twelve institutes across the nation, the agency is tirelessly working to achieve its goals.

President Bola Tinubu, who serves as the overall chairman of NAASENI, strives to boost local product production and consumption, thereby providing ample employment opportunities. Alasoluyi expressed NASENI’s objectives succinctly as,

  • "Creation: We develop innovations through research."
  • "Collaboration: We partner with collaborators to refine and perfect our innovations."
  • "Commercialisation: We commercialise these innovations to bolster the economy."

A few of NASENI‘s notable achievements in this regard include the creation of solar irrigation systems, CNG conversion centers, building machines capable of manufacturing 1,000 blocks an hour, 10-inch tablets, locally made laptops, and electric tricycles (Keke Napep) poised for market launch.

Prof. Samuel Oluyamo, Deputy Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, expressed concerns over inadequate federal government funding for research at universities. He lamented how numerous projects are abandoned midway due to insufficient finances and poor industrial connections. Furthermore, he questioned the government’s commitment to supporting research and development, asserting that many academic innovations remain underutilized due to a lack of commercialization assistance and inadequate infrastructure.
