Nigeria Warns of Surge in Cyber Slavery Targeting Youths
The Nigeria Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sounded the alarm over a surge in cyber slavery, specifically targeting young Nigerians. The ministry warns of false job offers, particularly in the crypto sector, which often lead to exploitation and fraud.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has identified eight individuals, including Nigerians and Kenyans, allegedly behind the CBEX crypto scam. The suspects, who have not been publicly named, are wanted for defrauding victims, mainly Americans and Europeans.
In Namibia, 50 young Namibians were arrested for their suspected involvement in an international crypto investment scam. The scheme saw young people recruited and trained to create false profiles, luring unsuspecting US citizens into a crypto investment trap. Similar incidents have been reported across Africa, including in South Africa, Kenya, and Namibia.
In December 2024, the EFCC apprehended 792 individuals for crypto and online romance scams, including 148 Chinese and 40 Filipinos. The ministry advises Nigerians to verify employment offers and report suspicious cases to relevant authorities to prevent falling victim to these schemes.
The rise in cyber slavery and crypto-related scams targeting Nigerian youths is a cause for concern. The ministry's warning and the EFCC's actions highlight the need for vigilance and cooperation to combat this growing threat. Victims are urged to report suspicious activities, and potential victims are advised to verify job offers before engaging.
