New Equipment Arrives in Silhouette 2021: Refreshed Roto and Paint Tools, Plus a Node-Based Plugin
The latest release of Boris FX Silhouette, Silhouette 2021, has made a significant impact on the post-production industry with its array of new features and enhancements.
Silhouette 2021 offers two subscription options: a yearly subscription for $395 for the Silhouette plugin and $695 for the Silhouette standalone application plus plugin. For those preferring a one-time payment, the single license price is $995 for the Multi-host plugins and $1795 for the Standalone + Multi-host plugins.
One of the standout features in Silhouette 2021 is the new Roto Editing Tools. These include Brush Reshape, Point Collapse and Distribute, Point Groups, Split Shapes, and Weighted MultiFrame. The Brush Reshape tool, in particular, uses a circular brush to automatically select and move points when clicked and dragged, streamlining the rotoscoping process.
The update also introduces the Lens Correction node, a new feature that can calibrate and correct lens distortion for advanced effects tasks or generate and export an ST Map for other host applications.
In terms of non-destructive paint workflow, Silhouette 2021 offers improved flexibility, allowing artists to paint and composite directly on footage without the need for destructive edits. New paint enhancements include Clone Source Masking and an improved Color Picker.
Silhouette 2021 also marks the introduction of initial USD (Universal Scene Description) support, enabling better integration in complex 3D pipelines. The update also includes the Multi-merge tool for layer-based work, streamlining compositing tasks and improving artist control over complex shot construction.
Moreover, Silhouette 2021 now supports importing 3D scenes from Alembic or FBX files, enabling users to place cards, track in 3D, stabilize, paint, or composite within a 3D-aware environment.
AI tools for refining masks and generating depth maps are also part of the 2021 release, facilitating more precise and faster rotoscoping and compositing tasks by leveraging machine learning technologies.
Silhouette 2021 is now available as an affordable plugin for popular post-production industry host applications such as Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro, Foundry Nuke, Blackmagic Design DaVinci Resolve and Fusion, Autodesk Flame, and VEGAS Pro.
