New A72 product unveiled

The long-awaited completion of the A72 motorway section between Rötha and the A38 is now within sight, with the project expected to be finished by the end of 2025. The ongoing construction aims to close the gap between Rötha and the A38, enhancing traffic flow and connectivity in the region.

As of the latest updates, significant progress has been made on the roadway itself, but some final tasks remain to complete the full stretch. The new section, approximately 2 kilometers long, is scheduled to open on Saturday, although only 3 out of the planned 6 lanes will be operational initially due to the missing median.

Due to construction activities, temporary lane closures and reduced speed limits are in place intermittently. These restrictions affect traffic flow and may cause delays, particularly during peak hours. Specific sections might have night-time closures or alternating one-way traffic controlled by signals.

To mitigate noise pollution for nearby residents, several noise barriers and sound insulation measures are being installed. The plans include the erection of noise protection walls along residential stretches, landscaping buffers and earth berms, the use of low-noise asphalt where applicable, and continuous monitoring of noise levels to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

However, it's important to note that the implementation of the noise protection concept is approximately scheduled for 2028, after the planned opening at the end of 2026. A large noise protection wall has already been constructed to protect the nearby village of Großdeuben from highway noise.

The Zwenkau interchange, a key part of the project, is now complete, but temporary restrictions/closures, especially in the area of the Zwenkau interchange, will continue to be in place.

For detailed, up-to-date information, it's recommended to check with the local road authority or the Saxony Ministry of Transport, as construction timelines and restrictions can be subject to change based on weather and other factors. The A72 section south of Leipzig is not yet finalized, and the special whisper asphalt requires more frequent maintenance and renewals.

This development is set to bring substantial improvements to the region's transportation infrastructure, making travel more efficient and smoother for residents and visitors alike.

Although the new section of the A72 motorway is scheduled to open in 2025, only three out of the six planned lanes will be operational initially. On the other hand, the integration of technology such as noise barriers and sound insulation measures is expected to improve the quality of life in residential areas, but these advancements will be implemented in 2028.
