National Propane Day Honours Clean School Bus Revolution
On October 7, the United States celebrates National Propane Day, honouring the professionals who make clean transportation possible. This day also highlights the benefits of propane autogas for school buses, with over 22,000 already in operation across the country.
Propane autogas is a clean alternative to diesel, producing up to 96 percent fewer nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. This significantly improves air quality, especially around schools. Over 1,100 school districts benefit from this clean fuel, with more than 22,000 propane autogas school buses in service.
The Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) supports this shift. They provide safety and training programs, and invest in research for new propane-powered technologies. One such innovation is propane-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging systems. These systems ensure school buses stay charged even during power outages, enhancing fleet resilience. Propane autogas is stored on-site and does not degrade, making it a reliable option during power disruptions. Moreover, it offers lower fuel and maintenance costs compared to diesel, supporting more affordable school transportation.
