Mobile service expansion: Vodafone establishes fresh mobile tower in Ahorn
In a significant move towards digital transformation, Vodafone Germany has launched a new 5G mobile network station in the town of Ahorn, marking the elimination of a dead zone in mobile broadband coverage. This expansion is part of Vodafone's ongoing commitment to improving connectivity across the Main-Tauber District.
The new station, equipped with the latest emergency call technology AML and disaster warning system Cell Broadcast, will support approximately 3,000 residents and guests, connecting them to Vodafone's mobile data highway for the first time. Vodafone's Chief Technology Officer, Tanja Richter, emphasised the importance of mobile networks for quality of life, local economy, and jobs, stating that citizens use them extensively for various purposes.
Currently, Vodafone's 5G network reaches over 72 percent of the inhabited areas in the district, with 28 stations also equipped with the broadband technology 5G. The company operates a total of 71 mobile network stations in the district, with 65 equipped with mobile broadband technology LTE.
Looking ahead, Vodafone has outlined ambitious expansion plans for the Main-Tauber District. The company aims to increase the number of 5G base stations to enhance coverage, particularly in smaller towns and rural communities. To support this growth, Vodafone is investing in fiber-optic infrastructure to ensure high-speed, low-latency connections for its 5G sites.
In addition, Vodafone plans to introduce advanced 5G technologies such as Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) and Massive MIMO to improve network capacity and efficiency. The company is also collaborating with local authorities to streamline site installation and rollout, aiming for seamless service expansion.
Vodafone is not only focused on network expansion but also on supporting local industries in their digital transformation. The company plans to develop tailored 5G solutions for sectors like agriculture and manufacturing in Main-Tauber.
Vodafone's ongoing investment in the Main-Tauber District is a testament to its commitment to ensuring that even less densely populated areas benefit from 5G’s capabilities. The company aims to convert the remaining 43 mobile network stations in the district to 5G+ sites, if technically feasible, with a goal of comprehensive coverage within the next few years (2025–2027). This aligns with Germany’s national broadband goals and Vodafone’s broader strategy to stay competitive.
It's worth noting that Vodafone Germany, the largest national subsidiary of the Vodafone Group, operates as a leading communications company in Germany, providing internet, mobile, fixed-line, and TV services. The company also aims to be carbon neutral by 2025 and net-zero emissions by 2040, with 100% of its electricity needs already covered by renewable energies.
