Military AI technology advancement: Meta partners with defense industry to develop AI-driven device for soldiers' operations

Meta and Defense Startup Anduril Partner for AI-Powered Soldier Gear

Meta Platforms, parent company of Facebook, has announced a collaboration with defense startup Anduril to develop AI-enabled technologies for soldier gear. The companies aim to combine Meta's augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence technologies with Anduril's data analysis platform, Lattice.

In a joint statement on Thursday, Mark Zuckerberg, Meta's CEO, said, "We are proud to work with Anduril to provide these technologies to American soldiers who protect our interests at home and abroad."

Anduril's Lattice is an AI-assisted command and control system designed to provide real-time battle zone information for decision-making. The partnership will likely result in the creation of products such as glasses, goggles, or visors to enhance battlefield intelligence for soldiers.

Palmer Luckey, founder of Anduril, expressed his excitement about the collaboration. "I'm excited to collaborate with Meta again," he stated. Luckey is known for co-founding the VR company Oculus, which was bought by Facebook in 2014.

This partnership is part of the Soldier Borne Mission Command (SBMC) Next program, previously known as the Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) Next. The initiative aims to develop mixed reality devices that improve perception and allow intuitive control of autonomous platforms on the battlefield.

Furthermore, the collaboration positions both companies to compete for the next generation of the U.S. Army's mixed-reality heads-up display program. By leveraging advanced hardware, software, and AI capabilities, the joint effort is poised to create cutting-edge technologies for the military.
