Microsoft's Copilot Gets Human-Like Avatars With Portraits
Microsoft has unveiled a new feature for its AI assistant, Copilot, called Portraits. The system responds to user feedback, offering a more human-like interaction with the chatbot during conversations. Portraits is now available to a subset of adult users in the US, UK, and Canada via Copilot Labs.
Powered by Microsoft's VASA-1 technology, Portraits creates lifelike expressions and animations from a single image, without the need for complex 3D modelling. The avatars are stylised rather than photorealistic, balancing realism with safety. Users can choose from 40 AI-generated avatars that respond with real-time facial expressions, head movements, and lip sync, paired with various voices.
This is not Microsoft's first attempt to give Copilot a more approachable image. Previously, they introduced Copilot Appearances with cartoon-like blobs. Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft's AI division and co-founder of DeepMind, officially announced the introduction of AI assistant portraits for Copilot in 2025, with discussions and insights shared publicly around September 2025.
Portraits is currently available to a limited number of adult users, with daily usage limits and clear on-screen indicators reminding users they are interacting with AI. Microsoft is testing this new feature to enhance user experience and make Copilot's interactions more engaging and relatable.
