Mark Zuckerberg unveiled three new glasses at the Meta developer conference, marking a significant step in his ambition to integrate AI into daily life. Among these, the most ambitious and technically advanced is the Meta Ray-Ban Display, Meta's new AI glasses.

The Meta Ray-Ban Display represents a significant departure from its predecessor, Ray-Ban's Meta glasses. Unlike the previous model, the new glasses feature a display in the right lens, making them the first of their kind in Meta's product line. This innovation sets them apart from other glasses in the market, according to Bjoern Schwerdtfeger from AR-Experts.

The Meta Ray-Ban Display aims to offer more than just headphone and camera functions. With apps like Instagram or WhatsApp placed directly in front of users' eyes, these glasses promise to revolutionise the way we interact with digital content. However, questions arise about whether they will maintain their minimal invasive character and remain a product that can be sold in large quantities.

Another concern is whether customers want more functionality outside of special applications. The prospect of having WhatsApp messages or Instagram posts displayed in one's field of view raises concerns about distraction and privacy.

In contrast, the Meta Ray-Ban glasses without a display set themselves apart as practical accessories for activities like listening to music or taking photos while riding a bike. They are compared to a mix of Bluetooth headphones and a phone camera.

Zuckerberg's goal with the new glasses is to get users accustomed to new AI features, such as subtitles or translations displayed in the glasses' display during conversations. This would make communication more accessible and efficient for millions of people worldwide.

The Meta Ray-Ban Display is not the only player in the smart glasses market. Google is working with the Korean eyewear brand Gentle Monster to develop new smart glasses, and Apple is rumoured to release a lighter AI glasses model soon. Other companies, such as Apple with their 'Vision Pro' glasses, are focusing on augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) devices.

Meta's competitors are noted for their immersive virtual experiences, but they have drawbacks like causing eye strain. Meta, on the other hand, aims for hologram glasses that complement reality without isolation, positioning these companies as key competitors in the smart glasses industry.

The new display glasses are set to go on sale for $799. However, Meta would have to convince customers to switch to its own platform in the long term, or they might just use the AI glasses within the Apple or Google ecosystem. The new glasses are a strategic attempt by Zuckerberg to establish Meta's own platform for its products, bypassing Apple and Google.

The Meta Ray-Ban glasses, without a display, have been a sales hit, with EssilorLuxottica selling two million units since October 2023. With the introduction of the Meta Ray-Ban Display, Meta is poised to challenge the status quo in the smart glasses market and redefine the way we interact with digital content.
