Meta's Hyperspace enables the scanning of the physical world and its transformation into the Metaverse, while offering innovative AI tools for users to create anything they desire.
Meta Unveils New Tools for Virtual Reality Creation and Entertainment
Meta, the tech giant formerly known as Facebook, is making waves in the virtual reality (VR) world with the announcement of two new platforms: Horizon Engine and Horizon Studio. These tools are designed to lower the barrier for entry into VR creation without compromising on what's possible.
The Horizon Engine, built from scratch, promises better graphics and faster performance for developers. It's capable of supporting up to "5x more people" in a single space compared to Meta's previous engine. This means smoother experiences for multiplayer games and more immersive environments.
Horizon Studio, an editor and hub for creators, comes equipped with generative AI tools. These tools can create audio, textures, TypeScript, skyboxes, and more via text prompts, making the process of building games and worlds faster and more intuitive. In the near future, Horizon Studio will also include agentic AI assistants to further speed up the creation process.
Meta is also introducing Hyperspace, a tool that uses cameras on Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S headsets to create digital replicas of real-world spaces in minutes. Hyperspace is currently in beta and rolling out gradually to Quest 3 and Quest 3S owners, aged 18 and up. However, it's worth noting that Meta does not mention if you can capture outdoor spaces with Hyperspace, and all provided examples are only of interior rooms.
Hyperspace has already been showcased with rooms from celebrities like Chance the Rapper's living room and Gordon Ramsay's kitchen. This technology could revolutionise the way we experience virtual spaces, making them more personal and interactive.
In addition to these tools for creators, Meta is launching Horizon TV, an entertainment hub that will feature Disney Plus. Meta is also partnering with Universal and Blumhouse to bring horror movies like M3GAN and The Black Phone with immersive special effects to Horizon TV.
The VR gaming landscape is also set to expand, with several titles announced for Meta Quest VR headsets over the summer. These include Marvel's DeadPool VR, ILM's Star Wars: Beyond Victory, and Demeo x Dungeons & Dragons: Battlemarked. For fans of tabletop RPGs, Demeo stands out as one of the best VR games available.
Meta's goal with these new tools is to enable people to build gaming worlds in minutes rather than days or months. This could open up a whole new world of possibilities for VR creation and entertainment. While some features, like visiting other people's replicas with Hyperspace, are still in development, the future of virtual reality looks promising with Meta at the helm.
