In a recent development, Meta, the tech giant behind Facebook and other popular platforms, has addressed a significant issue with its AI chatbot platform. The glitch, discovered by cybersecurity expert Sandeep Hodkasia in December 2024, allowed unauthorised users to access private user prompts and AI-generated responses.

The bug was caused by a lack of adequate access checks in Meta's backend servers. By altering a numeric code assigned to each prompt, Hodkasia could retrieve AI responses associated with other users, raising concerns about privacy breaches.

Meta swiftly implemented a fix for the flaw on January 24, 2025, and no misuse was detected. However, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of prioritising security, especially in the scaling stage of AI platforms.

The AI chatbot, which competes with tools like ChatGPT, handles increasing amounts of personal and creative data. Some early users inadvertently made their conversations public, underscoring the need for robust data governance and access controls.

Experts recommend comprehensive access controls and data governance, including maintaining a detailed inventory of AI models, tracking who accessed what data and when, and integrating role-based access management. Pre- and post-deployment testing, continuous auditing with automated tools, human-in-the-loop mechanisms, transparency, and explainability are also crucial for maintaining security.

Moreover, security should be embedded in the AI software development lifecycle from the outset, rather than an afterthought. These combined best practices create a layered defense that controls data and access tightly, ensures transparency, provides accountability, and enables proactive detection and mitigation of privacy risks.

The discovery of the bug in Meta's AI chatbot adds another layer to Meta's ongoing struggle with user trust. It serves as a wake-up call for the industry about the importance of implementing better access controls and ongoing auditing mechanisms to safeguard user privacy and maintain trust in AI innovations.
