Manga Invasion: A Novel Japanese Comic Series Aims for Dominance in the U.S. Market
In August 2025, Kodansha, a renowned Japanese publisher, marks the 45th anniversary of its iconic Young Magazine with the U.S. debut of an exclusive English edition. This special issue features 19 new manga chapters from prominent and emerging creators, spanning genres such as sci-fi, dark horror, and cyberpunk.
Notable contributors include Shuzo Oshimi, known for The Flowers of Evil, Masaaki Nakayama, creator of PTSD Radio, and Shuichi Shigeno, the brain behind Initial D and MF Ghost. The cover of this US-exclusive edition boasts an original illustration by Shirow Masamune, famed for Ghost in the Shell, depicting a futuristic urban scene.
This special edition serves as an experimental bridge to expand manga readership in the U.S. market. It blends established classics and innovative new stories to gauge audience preferences.
The debut issue, themed "unfiltered manga", will be available for free digital release on Azuki and at Anime NYC conventions and participating Kinokuniya bookstores in the U.S. Readers can access this over 1000-page special issue and cast votes by November 10, 2025, to select their favourite series from the 19 featured chapters. The five titles receiving the most votes will continue serialization both in English and Japanese editions later in the year.
Hidemi Shiraki, the chief editor of this special English issue, emphasizes the unique appeal of manga for young adults. He hopes readers in North America can connect with the raw emotional complexities of life explored in seinen manga through the stories in the special issue.
The US-exclusive edition of Young Magazine has been released, showcasing a futuristic city in its cover art. The works within are created by both established and emerging talents from Japan and abroad. Some of the featured works include Subaru and Subaru by Shuichi Shigeno, Me and Bob Dylan (And My Father) by Shuzo Oshimi, and The Graveyard Shift by Sato Yoshimi.
The special issue will be available from August 21 to 24 during Anime NYC 2025 and at 17 Kinokuniya bookstores across the United States. The top five titles from the fan voting will be serialized in both Japanese and English later this year in the official English edition of Young Magazine and Kodansha's K Manga app. The rankings for the fan voting will be determined by votes on the special website and by the number of likes and reposts their shares receive on X (formerly Twitter).
