Malaysian Animator onlyparkland's Art Journey: From Sketchbook Routine to Illustrating Hilda's World

Jason Chan P.L., known as onlyparkland, is a Malaysian freelance animator and artist making waves in the art world. Currently based at Kurechii, a game development studio, Chan's passion for drawing began at the age of seven, inspired by Dragon Ball.

Chan's artistic journey is marked by consistent practice and exploration. He started a sketchbook routine in 2012, initially sketching one drawing a day and later increasing it to a couple of pages every weekend. He carries two sketchbooks - one for better paper for painting, the other for looser, quicker sketches. Chan loves painting in his sketchbooks, particularly urban sketching, which he enjoys without any 'fancy tools'. His urban sketching kit comprises a paint box with 20 colours, a small and a medium-sized brush, and a water bottle.

Chan's skillset has evolved over time. He started using watercolours around 2015 and began incorporating more shades in 2017, learning from Mateusz Urbanowicz and Parka Blogs videos. He sets goals for his sketchbook art, including gesture drawing, urban sketching, master studies, and watercolour studies.

Chan's dedication to his craft has led to notable works. He has illustrated 'Hilda's Book of Beasts and Spirits' and 'Hilda's World: A guide to Trollberg, the Wilderness, and Beyond'. Despite his accomplishments, Chan remains humble, using simple tools for his urban sketches, and continues to push his artistic boundaries through consistent practice.
