Majority of Americans Open to Innovative Road Funding Methods
A recent survey by the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) reveals that a significant majority of Americans, 81%, are open to exploring innovative funding methods for road maintenance and improvement. The 'Funding America's Roads-2024' survey highlights the need for a shift in road funding strategies, with traditional fuel taxes becoming less effective due to improving vehicle fuel efficiency.
The survey found that Americans are divided in their preference for alternative funding models. A slight majority, 51%, favour a system based on miles driven, while 45% prefer a vehicle type-based funding model. This indicates a broad acceptance of user-based fees, which can more accurately reflect the wear and tear caused by individual vehicles.
The survey also underscores Americans' concern about the current state of the nation's roadways. Half of the respondents believe there is insufficient investment in the USA's roadways, suggesting a pressing need for increased funding. This concern is echoed in the strong preference for funding road maintenance based on miles driven or vehicle type, with over 60% of Americans supporting these methods.
The ARTBA's 'Funding America's Roads-2024' survey underscores the urgent need for a re-evaluation of the USA's road funding strategies. With traditional fuel taxes losing their effectiveness due to improved vehicle fuel efficiency, Americans are increasingly open to alternative funding methods. The preference for user-based fees, such as those based on miles driven or vehicle type, suggests a willingness to contribute fairly to the maintenance and improvement of the nation's roadways.
