Safaricom Ethiopia Launches Fiber Infrastructure Project to Boost Digital Connectivity

Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia has embarked on a significant project to install new fiber infrastructure, connecting the Afdera area in the Afar region with Mekelle. This initiative aims to address growing data demands in the region and improve network resilience, as part of Safaricom's broader efforts to advance digital infrastructure across Ethiopia [1].

The new fiber infrastructure, which is being installed by Safaricom Ethiopia, connects Afdera to Mekelle. The kickoff ceremony for this project was attended by officials from the Afar Regional Administration, including the Deputy Commissioner for Disaster and Risk Management, Mr. Ali Mohammed. He commended the initiative, noting both its relevance and the awareness it brings to the region's ongoing challenges.

In addition to this infrastructure project, Safaricom Ethiopia has shown a commitment to supporting vulnerable communities. Recently, the company donated emergency relief items valued at 500,000 Birr to residents affected by flooding in Afdera. The donation includes 1,000 square meters of tenting material, 200 liters of edible oil, 500 kilograms of rice, and 500 kilograms of white flour. This donation is a continuation of Safaricom Ethiopia's longstanding approach to combine infrastructure rollouts with community support.

The company's efforts in Afdera and Mekelle encompass both fiber installation to enhance digital infrastructure and community support through emergency relief donations. This dual commitment reflects Safaricom Ethiopia's focus on technological advancement and social welfare in these areas [1].
