Local social platform Nextdoor teams up with local news sources for expanded services.
Nextdoor, the community-based platform, is undergoing a significant redesign, claiming it to be the most consequential to date. The aim is to increase the platform's value for users, making it a daily necessity instead of a weekly visit.
The redesign focuses on three core features: Alerts, News, and Faves.
The Alerts section will provide real-time updates on various topics, including weather, traffic, and critical events such as power outages, severe storms, and wildfires. These updates are sourced directly from official entities to ensure prompt and reliable information.
The News section will partner with over 3,500 trusted local news sources to serve users with relevant, hyper-local news tailored to their specific neighborhoods. Unlike before, the redesign encourages user interaction by prompting comments and conversations around news stories, transforming them from static content into active discussions.
Faves, an AI-powered feature, answers users’ local questions and provides personalized community recommendations. It does this by analysing past neighborhood posts on related topics and leveraging Nextdoor’s 15 years of proprietary user data to foster connections and make the platform more useful in users’ everyday lives.
The redesign also introduces a refreshed brand identity and a sleek, minimal navigation interface inspired by Apple’s Liquid Glass design. This change emphasises content rather than complex navigation elements, aiming to create a more user-friendly experience.
According to Nextdoor’s leadership, these changes represent a "refounding" aimed at making the app an essential utility – helping people feel more informed, safe, and connected within their local communities.
This strategic update positions Nextdoor as a serious player in local social networking and community engagement, capitalising on trends like increased remote work and the growing demand for neighbourhood-level information.
Tim Franklin, head of the Medill Local News Initiative at Northwestern, suggests that Nextdoor could provide a lifeline to local news organisations struggling against Google’s AI answers.
Nextdoor's CEO, Nirav Tolia, stated that they initially thought neighbours would act as citizen journalists or local reporters, but have since realised that neighbours can only do so much. The platform is pushing to become a source of reliable information.
The redesign aims to increase daily usage among its 100 million registered users, with the hope of boosting the number of users who log in once a week to a more consistent daily use. This increased usage could provide a boost for the struggling local news market.
With these changes, Nextdoor is positioning itself as a valuable resource for local communities, offering real-time updates, community-focused journalism, and personalized recommendations.
