A legal challenge has been launched against several federal agencies, including the General Services Administration (GSA), over the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the Trump administration's deregulation efforts. Democracy Forward, a nonprofit legal group, alleges that the GSA plays a central role in these White House initiatives.

Democracy Forward has filed Freedom of Information Act requests, seeking documents related to AI use in deregulation. The group's president, Skye Perryman, argues that AI should complement, not replace, civil service professionals. The GSA, however, has not responded within the required timeline, prompting the lawsuit.

An email from the GSA indicates progress in reviewing and revising policies, leading to the elimination or revision of over 100,000 words of regulation. The agency has also launched the USAi tool, allowing federal agencies to test AI models before procurement. Meanwhile, an AI tool called SweetREX, developed by an affiliate of the Department of Government Efficiency, is reported to flag regulations for elimination.

The lawsuit, which names the GSA, Office of Personnel Management, Office of Management and Budget, and Department of Housing and Urban Development as defendants, seeks to shed light on the use of AI in the deregulation process. The GSA has declined to comment on the active lawsuit, and other agencies have not responded to requests for comment.
