Law enforcement in Ingolstadt thwarts a drug trafficking attempt - suspect flees on an electric bicycle
In a recent incident in Ingolstadt, Germany, a man was arrested for violations of the Narcotics Act and several traffic offenses.
The incident occurred on Gaimersheimer Street on Friday evening, where the man was caught red-handed during a drug handover. According to the police, a drug test conducted on the suspect came back positive.
However, no further information was provided about the nature or type of drugs involved, nor was any additional detail given about the identity of the arrested man.
The man was also charged with several traffic violations. He was found to be driving without a valid driver's license, without insurance, and his e-bike, which can accelerate to 45 kilometers per hour, was unregistered.
E-bikes in Ingolstadt, like in the rest of Germany, are classified under three main types, each with different requirements regarding licenses, insurance, and adherence to traffic laws.
- Pedelecs (up to 25 km/h assisted speed with motor power ≤ 250W) are considered bicycles and do not require a driver's license or insurance.
- S-Pedelecs or Speed Pedelecs (assistance up to 45 km/h) are classified similarly to mopeds and require a moped driver's license (AM license), insurance, and registration.
- Electric mopeds or e-bikes exceeding 45 km/h fall under motor vehicle regulations and require the corresponding motorcycle license, insurance, registration, and compliance with roadworthiness standards.
Penalties for driving an e-bike without the required license or insurance can be severe. For S-Pedelecs or speed pedelecs, driving without the required moped license or insurance leads to fines, and the vehicle may be considered unregistered and uninsured. This can result in significant fines, liability for damages in case of accidents, and possibly legal consequences including points on the driving record or even criminal charges for severe cases.
Riding a vehicle classified as requiring insurance without coverage may also entail fines and personal financial risk in the event of an accident. Pedelecs (up to 25 km/h) do not require a license or insurance, so no penalty applies for these in terms of without license or insurance concerns.
The man arrested in Ingolstadt was riding an e-bike classified as an S-Pedelec, making him subject to these penalties. He could not provide a valid driver's license during the arrest and was charged accordingly.
Officers from the Ingolstadt Police Inspectorate were involved in the drug handover operation, and the suspect was arrested after attempting to flee on his e-bike.
