Kenworth introduced two new electric trucks powered by batteries.
Kenworth, a leading manufacturer of heavy-duty trucks, has announced the introduction of two new battery-electric trucks - the T880E and the Next Generation T680E. These innovative vehicles are designed to provide powerful, reliable, and environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional diesel trucks, setting a new standard for sustainable heavy-duty transportation.
The T880E, unveiled by PACCAR Kenworth, boasts a state-of-the-art electric powertrain platform. With a maximum power output of 650 horsepower and torque of 1,850 pound-feet, the T880E is well-equipped to handle a variety of vocational applications, including garbage collection, concrete mixing, fire and rescue, food and beverage transport, towing, and dumping. The truck's quieter operation is beneficial for noise-sensitive job sites and urban areas with noise ordinances. Moreover, it offers zero tailpipe emissions, contributing to reduced air pollution and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
The T880E also benefits from lower maintenance costs due to fewer moving parts and no need for fluid changes, compared with diesel trucks. It is driven by the ePowertrain platform, developed in-house by Kenworth's parent company, PACCAR. The truck is available in four battery-string options and various wheelbase and vehicle configurations, making it a versatile choice for different industries.
The T880E uses a CCS1 DC charge port and supports a 350 kW peak charging rate. Customer deliveries for the T880E are scheduled to begin later this year. The largest battery configuration offers 625 kWh of energy, has a range of 250+ miles, and is available in gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR) up to 82,000 lbs.
The Next Generation T680E, designed for short and regional haul, LTL and drayage operations, features an upgraded digital interface providing BEV-specific insights into range, regenerative braking, and performance. It offers three battery-string configurations for customizable range, horsepower ratings, and vehicle weight. The largest battery configuration features a 500 kWh battery pack, offers 200+ miles of range, and is available in GVWRs up to 82,000 lb.
Like the T880E, the T680E offers factory-installed options for high- and low-voltage ePTO ports. Both trucks feature Master Service Disconnects for improved safety and increased uptime, and can be troubleshooted and diagnosed using the DAVIE service tool. The T680E supports CCS1 DC fast charging at up to 350 kWh.
Joe Adams, Kenworth's chief engineer, explains that the central drive eMotor and updated vehicle architecture allow for increased battery capacity, charging speeds, wheelbase flexibility, and drivability in the T680E. The T680E also offers the same choice of Kenworth ADAS packages as the T880E.
Both the T880E and the Next Generation T680E are now available for order from Kenworth dealers in the US and Canada. With these new additions, Kenworth continues to lead the way in the development of sustainable, versatile, and cost-effective electric heavy-duty vehicles for various industries.
The T880E, equipped with an advanced electric powertrain, showcases its capabilities in sports-like performance, boasting a maximum power output of 650 horsepower and torque of 1850 pound-feet, making it suitable for various sports-like applications such as towing and dumping.
In the realm of sports, the next-generation T680E, designed for short-distance deliveries, mirrors the agility and speed required, featuring upgradeable battery options that offer ranges of 200+ miles, ideal for quick, efficient sports-like maneuvers.
