According to Kyodo News, 18 individuals have been wounded so far this summer, with a single 8-foot (2.5 meter) Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin being the prime suspect.

Tadamichi Morisaka, a dolphin researcher at Japan's Mie University, explained to Nature that gentle bites are common among male bottlenose dolphins, serving as a means to strengthen bonds. "In this dolphin's head, it may already have formed strong ties with us," Morisaka said.

Most injuries have resulted in shallow cuts requiring stitches, indicating the dolphin is simply yearning for some form of interaction instead of causing harm.

"We've observed this dolphin unexpectedly surfacing at a beach, biting humans if they're present, meandering off, and repeating," Morisaka said. "If it truly wanted to attack, it could have launched a fullfrontal assault, but it's keeping nibbles gentle for dolphin standards, so it's likely a friendly gesture, not a full-scale attack attempt."

Dolphins usually congregate in close-knit pods, but it's not uncommon for individuals to go solo. Morisaka also cautioned that the dolphin might become more aggressive in a bid to establish dominance, which could escalate human injuries due to its size and speed.
