Instagram Maps Rolls Out in Europe, Offering Location Sharing and Privacy Controls
Instagram is rolling out its location-sharing feature, Google Maps, across Europe. The tool, reminiscent of Snapchat's Snap-Map, lets users share their location and react to others' posts. Privacy controls are in place for minors and users can choose who sees their location.
Google Maps, initially launched in the USA in August 2025, allows users to share their location on a virtual map. Users can react to others' posts with direct messages or emojis. The feature has been in testing since 2024, with the USA launch sparking privacy concerns.
Parents can control location sharing for minors using teen accounts. Users can choose specific groups to share their location with, including accounts they follow or their 'Close Friends' list. They can also block individual locations from being shared, like their home or workplace. Alternatively, users can share their location with all profiles they follow and who also follow them.
Google Maps is now available in Europe, offering users more ways to interact and share their location. With careful consideration for privacy, users can control who sees their location and block specific places. The feature is part of Instagram's ongoing evolution, following its introduction by Meta in 2025.
