Collapse of Birch Glacier in Switzerland: Over 90% of Village of Blatten Buried

A catastrophic collapse of the Birch Glacier in Switzerland’s southern Valais region occurred on Wednesday, sending a torrent of rock, ice, and debris cascading down the mountainside and into the valley below. The event predominantly affected the highest village in the valley, Blatten, which was recently evacuated due to mounting danger.

The trigger for this disaster was the crumbling of the 3,800-meter-high Kleiner Nestorn that sat above the collapsed glacier, depositing approximately nine million tonnes of debris on the Birch Glacier and exerting immense pressure. Authorities had predicted the collapse, prompting the evacuation of the entire 300-strong community of Blatten last week.

The disaster left nearly 90% of Blatten under a blanket of debris and ice, including over 130 houses. According to the Swiss Seismological Service, the event registered 3.1 on the Richter scale, typically associated with earthquakes. Consequently, most of the village now lies submerged due to flooding caused by the accumulated blockage of the Lonza River.

Mourning the loss of one resident, aged 64, authorities launched a search and rescue operation on Wednesday. Three rescue specialists were airlifted to the scene, with a drone equipped with a thermal imaging camera also deployed in the mission. Regrettably, the missing individual has yet to be found.

At this point, it is uncertain when clean-up operations can commence, as the situation remains volatile. Experts suspect that most of the debris descended along with the landslide; however, there are still significant instabilities on the Kleiner Nesthorn. Raphaël Mayoraz, a natural hazards expert for the canton of Valais, warns that several hundred thousand cubic meters of rock are at risk of further avalanches, posing a serious threat of mudslides on both sides of the valley.

The unstable situation in the landslide area prevents the army from entering the zone, but operational preparations are being intensified near the site. The army is currently readying various equipment such as water pumps, excavators, and heavy-duty clearance machinery, while the Air Force stands ready for deployment.

The village of Blatten, as well as the villages of Wiler and Kippel below, have been inundated by floodwaters from the Lonza River. Officials remain vigilant, monitoring the situation constantly, but the destruction of the measuring station in the village hampers estimations of the water flow.

There exists a legitimate fear of an ice jam that can flood the valley below, according to Antoine Jacquod, a military security official for the canton of Valais. The substantial mounds of rocks, ice, and earth obstructing the Lonza River pose a substantial threat. Moreover, warmer weather is expected to thaw the ice, exacerbating the situation.

Historically, glacier collapses of such magnitude are uncommon events. Nevertheless, smaller landslides have grown more prevalent due to climate change. Glaciologists attribute these incidents to the melting of glaciers and permafrost, which acts as a stabilizing force in mountainous regions. As temperatures continue to rise, these ice masses deteriorate further, destabilizing slopes and raising the risk of landslides and glacier collapses. However, specific data on the occurrence of large-scale collapses is sparse due to their varying scales and impacts.
