Hyundai Glovis Vessel Delayed by Spider Infestation in Antwerp
The Hyundai Glovis-operated vessel, Glovis Sun, carrying over 6000 car equivalent units, faced a significant issue upon arrival in Antwerp. The ship was found to have a large population of spiders on board, leading to delays and inspections.
This incident serves as a reminder of the potential ecological threats and penalties that vessels face for breaches of biosecurity protocols. Earlier this year, another Hyundai Glovis vessel, the Glovis Caravel, was ordered back to China due to a stinkbug infestation. In 2010, the MV Altavia was turned away due to a similar issue with spiders, highlighting the rarity but severity of such infestations.
Upon discovery, the spiders on the Glovis Sun were exterminated, and the vessel underwent a thorough inspection before unloading. This proactive approach is crucial for shipping companies and vehicle logistics operators to prevent damage to cargo and ecological threats. The Glovis Sun, after addressing the issue, has since sailed on July 20 and is now en route to Emden, Germany.
The incident with the Glovis Sun underscores the importance of vigilance in pest control for shipping companies. Hyundai Glovis, the operator of the vessel, faces potential penalties and delays for the biosecurity breach. However, their prompt action in addressing the issue demonstrates their commitment to maintaining high biosecurity standards.
