Huawei's New Road-Noise Cancellation System Enhances In-Vehicle Acoustics

Huawei's Shanghai Acoustics R&D Centre has developed a cutting-edge road-noise cancellation system, utilising an 'omnidimensional model' and cloud computing for real-time adjustments. This innovation is set to enhance the acoustic experience in vehicles worldwide.

The system processes continuous sensor data through the cloud, enabling real-time adjustments based on various factors. It combines audio measurements, psychoacoustic principles, and advanced simulations that would overwhelm local processing capabilities. The centre boasts three testing environments generating vast volumes of measurement data.

The most complex feature, independent sound-zone technology, requires real-time wave interference pattern calculations and digital signal processing (DSP) adjustments. Huawei's expertise extends beyond this system, as it supplies automotive solutions to over twenty automakers, covering driver assistance, cockpit and control systems, and acoustics. The company collaborates with several manufacturers, including Audi and the BYD Group, focusing on smart car technologies like infotainment systems and digital cockpits. Huawei's Chief Automotive Sound & Acoustics Advisor, Lars Goller, leads the development of a 'master-tuning method'.

Huawei's investment in R&D, amounting to CNY 179.7 billion (approximately £20 billion / €23.4 billion) in 2024, reflects its commitment to innovation. With over 113,000 R&D employees, the company is poised to revolutionise automotive acoustics, improving driver and passenger experiences through advanced sound technologies.
