Hongqi Unveils First Smartphone, Nio Develops Second-Gen, China FAW & Ecarx Team Up
Hongqi, now operating independently, has unveiled its first model, the Hongqi EH7. Meanwhile, Nio is already developing its second-generation phone. In a significant development, China FAW and Geely-backed Ecarx have joined forces to create premium smartphones tailored for the Hongqi brand.
Hongqi's foray into the smartphone market comes as automakers increasingly seek to boost competitiveness and brand exposure. The Hongqi EH7, launched recently, is the first model since the company's independence. Nio, too, has ventured into this realm, launching its first Nio Phone in September 2023 at a starting price of RMB 6,499 ($900).
Polestar has also announced plans to release its first Polestar Phone on April 23. The collaboration between China FAW and Ecarx, backed by Geely, aims to provide an intelligent interactive experience for users. This partnership also extends to working together on the Hongqi smart cockpit and Hongqi OS. Hongqi New Energy's retail sales in 2023 saw a remarkable 135% year-on-year increase, exceeding 85,000 units.
The integration of smartphones with smart cockpit systems is helping car companies build comprehensive ecosystems. Hongqi's and Nio's entries into the smartphone market, along with Polestar's upcoming release, signal a growing trend among automakers. The collaboration between China FAW and Ecarx promises high-end smartphones that will enhance the user experience within the Hongqi brand.
