HHLA's Hydrogen Van-Carrier Marks Milestone in 2040 Climate Goal
HHLA has launched a sustainability initiative, 'Balanced Logistics', aiming to make the company climate-neutral by 2040. The strategy focuses on hydrogen technology to decarbonize operations where electrification falls short.
The company has introduced its first hydrogen-powered van-carrier at the Container Terminal Tollerort (CTT) in Hamburg. The vehicle, developed by Konecranes, uses a fuel cell as its drive. It has been operating on the test field since September 29, 2025, demonstrating quick response times and turnover performance matching hybrid vehicles.
Dr. Volker Windeck, HHLA's head of hydrogen projects, highlights the technology's performance level, now on par with conventional drives. The company is also developing staff training in parallel with the hydrogen van-carrier operation. The project is part of the Clean Port & Logistics Cluster, involving over 40 partner companies, and receives funding from the Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV) with around three million euros.
HHLA's hydrogen van-carrier marks a significant step towards its 2040 climate-neutral goal. The successful test operation at CTT, backed by the Clean Port & Logistics Cluster and BMV funding, paves the way for wider adoption of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty vehicles in Hamburg's port operations.
