long-standingRepublican figure, known for peddling health and wellness scams, is expected to reinforce Trump administration's most questionable decisions.

Healthcare Shift: Dr. Oz Takes Charge of Medicare and Medicaid Services for 140 Million U.S. Residents

In a questionable decision, the Senate officially confirmed quack-turned-TV-personality Mehmet Oz to lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on April 3, 2025. Despite opposition, the vote was along party lines, with a close 53 to 45 majority. This move puts Oz in charge of managing healthcare for approximately 140 million Americans, including nearly half of all kids on Medicaid. Given his shady past, recent staffing losses at CMS, and potential budget cuts, things are looking dark.

Mehmet Oz, otherwise known as Dr. Oz, kicked off his controversial career as a surgeon-turned-daytime TV star, owing much to his lengthy gig on Oprah and his own health-focused program, the Dr. Oz Show, from 2009 to 2022. Although popular, the show was often under fire for his promotion of pseudoscientific treatments and health products. In one particularly infamous instance, Dr. Oz endorsed green coffee bean extract for weight loss in 2012, leading to a Florida company capitalizing on his words. The company's deceptive marketing tactics, including the creation of fake news sites and unproven claims, landed them in hot water with the Federal Trade Commission. Dr. Oz eventually confronted Congress over his snake-oil selling.

In 2021, Dr. Oz jumped into the political arena, running for a Senate seat in Pennsylvania as a Republican. However, he lost the election to John Fetterman. As he's been an avowed Republican for decades, there's little doubt he'll execute the worst Republican impulses during his tenure at CMS. Prior to his political bid, Dr. Oz served on President Trump's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition in 2018. Unfortunately, the Trump administration shows no signs of leaving Medicare and Medicaid in good shape.

In a dose of bad news, the administration has already begun axing over 300 jobs from CMS as part of an initiative to slash positions across the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The cuts impact people's access to healthcare access, according to Democratic lawmakers. Despite GOP claims that Medicare benefits won't see cuts, their budget plan includes sweeping reductions that could lead to massive cuts to Medicaid. Some Republican-led proposals might even result in people being dropped from their Medicaid coverage altogether.

In the midst of a circus-like administration, Dr. Oz's reign as head of CMS could harm some of America's most vulnerable citizens. Let's hope for the best, but be cautious - experience suggests otherwise.

  1. The controversial figure, Dr. Oz, who was known for his promotion of pseudoscientific treatments and health products, has been confirmed to lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), a move that could have significant impacts on technology in health and science.
  2. Given Dr. Oz's past as a peddler of questionable health products, the effectiveness of CMS under his leadership remains unclear, particularly in the future management of health for children on Medicaid.
  3. As Oz takes charge of overseeing healthcare for millions of Americans, reports of budget cuts and job losses within CMS have raised concerns about the potential long-term effects on the health sector, especially in light of his past associations with discredited health practices.
  4. science and technology may play a crucial role in mitigating some of the negative effects of Oz's leadership, providing innovative solutions to maintain the effectiveness of healthcare services despite the potential budget cuts and staffing losses.
