Hamburg's EV Charging Points Surge 27% to 3,788, But Outer Districts Lag

Hamburg's charging infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs) has seen a significant boost, with a 27% increase in public charging points to 3,788 as of September 2025. However, the ADAC Hansa e.V. has raised concerns about the distribution of these points, urging more consideration for outer districts. The Left Party's Dietmar Bartsch has also criticized the lack of charging points in many German municipalities, describing it as a 'shameful failure' of the transport transition, particularly in rural areas.

Hamburg, with a higher share of vehicles with alternative drives compared to the national average, aims to have around 7,000 public charging points by 2027. Currently, the charging network is concentrated in the city center and adjacent districts, leaving outer areas with lower density. As of now, 10.4% of registered passenger cars in Hamburg have a hybrid drive, and 4.4% are purely electric.

To ensure fair charging, drivers are advised to keep charging spots free after use, select the right charger for their vehicle, park selectively, and handle charging stations carefully.

While Hamburg's charging infrastructure has grown significantly, there's a need for a more balanced distribution to cater to the outer districts. With a higher share of alternative drive vehicles, fair charging practices are crucial to maintain a smooth transition to electric mobility.
