Google's Pixel 10 Pro Fold Pioneers Foldable Hinge Dust Resistance

The forthcoming Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold is set to redefine engineering excellence in the realm of foldable devices. A series of rumours and reports suggest that the Pixel 10 Pro Fold will feature a fully dust-resistant hinge, a first for foldable phones.

The hinge of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is rumoured to be engineered with a new gearless design, reportedly twice as durable as the one on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, and designed to handle over a decade of folding. This robust hinge is made from high-grade aluminium alloy, engineered to be completely sealed against dust and water ingress.

The entire device, including the hinge area, has been given an IP68 rating, offering the same dust and water resistance standards as the other Pixel 10 phones. This means the foldable can withstand submersion and prevent any dust particles from entering. In contrast, most other foldable devices have struggled with dust resistance, with no other manufacturer achieving a full dust sealing to this degree.

The Pixel 10 Pro Fold's durability and the use of a TSMC-made Tensor G5 processor could set it apart from previous Pixel devices. The new hinge for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is rumoured to be as airtight as the International Space Station.

If Google delivers a foldable phone with IP68 ingress protection, it could cement the Pixel 10 series as being on another plane of existence from the rest of the Pixel series.

Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 was recently released without any improvement in dust resistance, offering only an IP48 rating that blocks dust particles larger than 1mm but not fine dust. This could make the Pixel 10 Pro Fold a game-changer in the foldable phone market.
