Google grants $2 million to Moringa for AI training of 3,600 Kenyan youth
Moringa, a leading AI training provider, has launched an ambitious initiative to equip 3,600 Kenyan youth with practical AI skills by December 2026. Funded by a $2 million grant from Google, this programme forms part of a broader effort to train 12,000 learners across Kenya and South Africa.
The initiative, which is in partnership with South Africa's WeThinkCode, aims to prepare young professionals for various sectors, including software engineering, education, and healthcare, among others. Initially, the focus is on upskilling young software engineers, with plans to expand to other sectors in the future.
According to Moringa's CEO, Nikki Germany, the programme is about more than just technology skills. It's about economic mobility, enabling thousands of Kenyans to not only consume AI-driven technologies but to become active innovators contributing meaningfully to the evolving AI economy.
Moringa is leveraging its extensive alumni network, grassroots partnerships, and regional expertise to ensure inclusive access and impact across the Kenyan workforce in these targeted sectors. The programme is designed to impart practical AI competencies such as using AI tools for smarter work, faster analysis, automation, and better decision-making—skills relevant to both technical and non-technical professionals.
To drive awareness and enrollment for the AI programme, Moringa is partnering with various tech hubs, universities, and industry leaders. A nationwide recruitment drive is also underway, targeting women, underrepresented communities, and professionals nationwide.
Nikki Germany believes that Kenya can lead the continent in responsible AI adoption, preparing the workforce for both future jobs and leadership in AI-driven technologies. The initiative further seeks to promote digital sovereignty and long-term national resilience in the face of rapidly evolving technologies.
In addition to equipping Kenyan youth with globally relevant skills, the programme aims to foster local innovation, standing as a bold step toward inclusive economic growth. Moringa remains committed to ensuring that Kenyan talent is not only ready for AI-driven transformation but actively shaping it as the programme scales.
