Google Docs: Lock Tables & Protect Content Without Losing Layout
Google Docs offers several ways to control access and maintain the layout of your documents. While it doesn't directly lock tables, there are effective workarounds to retain table placement and protect specific content.
To preserve table placement, adjust file permissions to 'viewing'. This restricts editing but keeps tables in their original position. For specific text protection, use the 'Text Lock' feature, which allows editing restrictions through permissions, Suggesting mode, or add-ons like DocSecrets for password encryption.
For formatting protection, copy and paste text without formatting into a new document. To lock an entire document, use the 'Editing options' and select 'Viewing'. Google Sheets, however, offers more flexibility for cell and sheet control compared to Google Docs.
To lock an image in Google Docs, select the image, choose 'Wrap Text' or 'Break Text', then 'Fix Position on Page'. The 'Suggesting mode' enables comments and suggestions without full editing access. To lock a table, create a 'View only' copy of the document.
Google Docs provides various methods to control access and maintain document layout. However, it's important to note that direct selective text encryption within Google Docs via add-ons is not currently supported.
