The Geely Starray, a new SUV from the Chinese automaker, is making its way to the New Zealand market. This vehicle, positioned to compete against other Chinese super hybrids like the BYD Sealion 6 and Chery Tiggo 7, is also aiming to attract a broader customer base, including hybrid and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.

The Geely Starray is a "super hybrid" vehicle, equipped with an 18.4kWh battery and a 1.4-liter petrol engine. Both models, Complete and Inspire, share the same 73kW/125Nm petrol engine and 160kW/262Nm electric motor, resulting in a combined power of 193kW.

The Geely Starray Inspire, priced at $49,950, offers additional features such as 19-inch wheels, a panoramic glass roof with sunshade, power tailgate, front parking sensors, 256-color interior lighting, ventilated/memory front seats, head-up display, and a 1000W Flyme 16-speaker audio system. The Complete version is available for $45,990.

One of the key advantages of the Geely Starray is its super hybrid technology. Unlike traditional plug-in hybrids, the combustion engine acts as a generator, offering a longer EV range. This technology is also used by other new Chinese brands like BYD and Chery.

The Geely Starray has an EV range of 83km (WLTP) and a total range of 943km in hybrid mode. The smaller Geely EX5 EV, priced between $49,990 and $53,990, offers a similar range.

From now until the end of the year, Geely is offering premium paint, 3 years of servicing, and 15,000km Road User Charges free-of-charge on the Starray. The Geely Starray is distributed by NordEast, which also handles Volvo, Polestar, Lotus, Zeekr, Farizon, and other brands.

The Geely Starray is not just targeting plug-in hybrid competitors but also hybrid and conventional ICE vehicles. By offering a versatile powertrain approach, including plug-in hybrid technology, combined with competitive pricing and features that appeal to a broad market, it bridges the gap between fully electric, hybrid, and traditional ICE cars.

Moreover, the Geely Starray is also aiming to draw people into this technology from the hybrid and ICE segments. It offers a logical rivalry with other Chinese super hybrids, but its broader target market makes it a compelling choice for a wider audience.
