Ford Motor Company is set to debut its first electric truck on a new platform in 2025. This groundbreaking vehicle, a midsize electric truck assembled in Kentucky, will be the first to be built on the Ford Universal EV Platform.

The Universal EV Platform is designed to make electric vehicles more affordable and competitive by significantly reducing complexity, parts, and manufacturing time. Key features include 20% fewer parts and 25% fewer fasteners, 40% fewer workstations required in the plant, and 15% faster assembly time.

The platform also boasts a drastically shorter and lighter wiring harness, cutting material costs and vehicle weight. It uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cobalt- and nickel-free prismatic batteries, which reduce battery cost, improve durability, and serve as a structural component forming the vehicle floor. This not only lowers the center of gravity for better handling but also provides more interior space.

The first electric truck on the new platform will have a performance similar to a Mustang EcoBoost and more passenger volume than a 2025 Toyota RAV4. The vehicles manufactured on this platform will be affordable for the average family, with Ford aiming for a base price of around $30,000 for a midsize electric pickup releasing in 2027.

Ford has invested $5 billion in the development of the Universal EV Platform, with $2 billion allocated to upgrade the Louisville Assembly Plant and $3 billion for a new Michigan battery factory, supporting mass production in America. The new EVs will offer competitive features like ample passenger room, additional storage space, instant torque, and enjoyable driving dynamics comparable to the Mustang EcoBoost.

The affordability of vehicles manufactured on the Universal EV Platform may give consumers more accessible options in the EV market. If Ford delivers on its $30,000 electric pickup promise, it could reshape the EV market, offering a budget-friendly alternative to electric trucks currently available. The new Ford electric pickup costs nearly $20,000 less than the Ford F-150 Lightning.

The Ford Universal EV Platform is structured into three branches: front, rear, and battery assembly. The vehicles built on the platform will feature batteries that are assembled in the United States. Ford's development of the Universal EV Platform could demonstrate that the manufacturer is listening to customers and working to meet their needs within their budget.

The expiration of the federal EV tax credit could give Ford a competitive edge in the next wave of electric vehicles. With the federal EV tax credit set to expire for vehicles purchased or leased after September 30, 2025, due to President Donald Trump's 2025 tax reform bill, Ford's affordable electric vehicles could attract a broader customer base.
