Mercedes Unveils Redesigned CLA-Class: Electric, Hybrid Options and Rapid Charging

Mercedes-Benz is set to launch a redesigned CLA-Class in 2026, marking the beginning of a downsized compact lineup for the automaker. The latest CLA-Class will offer both electric and hybrid powertrains, with an emphasis on rapid charging capabilities and an aerodynamic design.

The new CLA-Class will ride on a newly developed platform known as the MMA, which will also underpin the redesigned GLB-Class. The electric versions of the CLA-Class will feature a choice of single-motor rear-wheel-drive and dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrains, with the rear motor boasting a 268-hp rating and the front motor delivering 107 hp. For hybrids, a newly developed 1.5-liter turbo-4 will be paired with a 27-hp electric motor, resulting in a total system output of 187 hp.

The design of the new CLA-Class was previewed with the Concept CLA-Class, and details from the concept, such as the Mercedes star logo patterns in the head and taillights, are expected to make production. The new CLA-Class will also feature a dash with one wide panel that integrates screens for a digital gauge cluster and infotainment hub. Circular vents for the climate system add a modern touch to the interior.

In addition to the sedan, a new version of the CLA-Class Shooting Brake wagon is in development. The electric version of the new CLA-Class has also been seen during testing, and a high-performance AMG version is currently undergoing testing as well.

Mercedes has hinted at the ability to add 100 miles of range in less than 15 minutes of charging, thanks to an 800-volt electrical system that enables high-speed charging with a DC fast charger. The battery for hybrids will be a 1.3-kwh lithium-ion unit mounted under the driver's seat.

The development of the third generation of the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class was led by Michael Hölscher. With its sleek design, rapid charging capabilities, and choice of electric and hybrid powertrains, the new CLA-Class is poised to make a significant impact in the compact luxury market. Stay tuned for more updates as the 2026 launch approaches.
