U.S. Government Expands AI Vendor List for Responsible Use

The General Services Administration (GSA) has taken a significant step towards promoting the responsible use of AI technology in government agencies by adding three AI models to its list of approved vendors. The new additions include OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and Anthropic's Claude.

This move is part of the U.S. government's efforts to speed up the use of artificial intelligence (AI) by government agencies. The GSA's platform for AI tools provides a streamlined process for agencies to access and use these cutting-edge technologies.

The GSA has outlined federal standards for the responsible use of AI tools. These standards prioritize truthfulness, accuracy, transparency, and freedom from ideological bias. The aim is to ensure that federally procured AI systems prioritize factual correctness over ideological agendas, aligning with the Trump administration’s policy and the America's AI Action Plan.

AI models must deliver reliable and factually correct outputs, avoiding misinformation or distorted facts, according to the GSA's standards. Agencies should also use AI models that operate with clear disclosures about their functioning and limitations, supporting trustworthiness and accountability in government AI deployment.

Moreover, AI tools used by federal agencies should not advance ideological agendas or biased narratives. These standards build upon Executive Order 13960 (2020), emphasizing trustworthy AI in federal government use, particularly regarding large language models (LLMs) used for generating natural language.

The GSA offers government buyers access to vetted AI products like Anthropic’s Claude, Google’s Gemini, and OpenAI’s ChatGPT through the Multiple Award Schedule (MAS). This ensures procurement aligns with these responsible use principles.

The GSA also collaborates with agencies and private partners to provide discounted AI products and tailored training, which supports secure and responsible deployment across federal operations.

In summary, the GSA's federal standards for the responsible use of AI emphasize procuring and deploying AI tools that are accurate, transparent, free from bias, and compliant with government policies to responsibly modernize operations while safeguarding public trust. This move allows for the advance adoption of AI tools by the federal government, with the approved AI providers expected to adhere to these standards.

The incorporation of artificial-intelligence (AI) technology is being encouraged by the U.S. government for use in government agencies, with reliable AI models like OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and Anthropic's Claude now available through the General Services Administration's (GSA) vetted list of approved vendors. The GSA's platform prioritizes AI technology that adheres to federal standards, such as truthfulness, accuracy, transparency, and freedom from ideological bias, to ensure responsible AI deployment across federal operations.
