Family's custom LEGO creation of 'It's a Wonderful Life' reaches funding target, qualifying for potential official LEGO set recognition
In the world of LEGO enthusiasts, a father-daughter duo, Jason Middaugh and his 13-year-old daughter, Jane, have made a name for themselves with their meticulous creations. Their latest project, a LEGO replica of the Granville house from the classic film "It's a Wonderful Life", has been gaining traction.
Their design, created using LEGO's software and bricklink.com, received an impressive 10,000 fan votes on LEGO's official "Product Ideas" website. However, the journey from concept to potential store-bought set has been a lengthy one. While the design took a couple of weeks to create, the realization of the project took about half a year.
The LEGO replica is a faithful recreation, featuring the famous truss bridge, George's car, signs such as "You are Now in Bedford Falls", and Minifigures of the Bailey family, Mr. Potter, and the angel Clarence. It also includes memorable scenes such as the Christmas tree and bell in the living room, and the "George Lassos the Moon Drawing" on the second floor.
If approved, the "It's a Wonderful Life" LEGO set will join the ranks of other fan-submitted LEGO sets that have been turned into official products, including designs inspired by "Ghostbusters", "Friends", "Seinfeld", and "Home Alone".
The process of creating these LEGO replicas is more logistically complex than people might realise. The Middaughs expressed that it has been a learning experience for Jason, who has been a big fan of Christmas movies, including "It's a Wonderful Life".
If the "It's a Wonderful Life" LEGO set is approved, Jason will collaborate with official LEGO designers to finalise the set. He expressed his excitement about the possibility of having a locally designed LEGO set available in stores.
Interestingly, the Middaughs have attempted to create a LEGO replica of the "A Christmas Story" house as well, complete with a leg lamp. However, due to licensing issues, their design did not make it past the 10,000 signature mark needed for consideration.
As of July 2025, 76 fan-submitted LEGO Ideas sets have been approved and produced since the program began in 2010. While sets based on "It's a Wonderful Life", "Friends", and "Seinfeld" were not explicitly listed in the search results, sets based on popular franchises and movies have appeared in the LEGO Ideas roster historically or as officially licensed LEGO products inspired by fan interest.
LEGO Ideas recently saw record numbers of fan projects passing 10,000 votes, with 74 projects making up the largest review round by mid-2025. If the "It's a Wonderful Life" LEGO set is approved, it will join this esteemed list of fan-approved projects turned official LEGO sets.
Technology played a significant role in the creation of the Middaughs' LEGO replica of the Granville house from "It's a Wonderful Life", as they used LEGO's software and bricklink.com to design the meticulous structure.
The Middaughs' project, if approved, could potentially be added to the list of fan-submitted LEGO sets that have been transformed into movies-and-tv-themed official products, like the ones inspired by "Ghostbusters" and "Friends".
