Firstly, you've got the drone (ROV) itself, accompanied by a choice of an accessory, and the challenge of selecting the right retailer. We opted for the Chasing Dory due to its budget-friendliness, lucky for us it's the cheapest on the market.

While basic, it boasts a camera, depths of up to 15 meters, and seamless mobile app control. Keep in mind that the price tag already surpasses the 400-euro mark, so taxes and customs fees can significantly affect the final cost.

There are two purchase options: buy just the drone, or invest in the drone, remote control, towel, and backpack pack – a small 20-euro price increase over purchasing separately. We opted for the second package here.

As for where to buy it, there are three main options:

• Direct purchase from Spain (which is how we procured it), taking only a couple of days to arrive. The price is approximately 540 euros, as there are currently limited quantities available. You can find the link below if ye be interested.
• The drone can be found on AliExpress for the same price.

When it comes to controls and accessories, the Chasing Dory is relatively sparse, although the remote control can be purchased separately at around 70 euros. Suffice it to say that the drone is manageable without it via mobile app control.

Unboxing

Since we purchased the Chasing Dory in Spain, it arrived surprisingly quick. In just two days, it was at our doorstep. Care to watch our video to find out what came in the box? Although it mainly corresponds to the image, there are a few differences.

Start-up and basic operation

With that, we'll set sail on our test in a controlled environment, like a swimming pool, small lagoon, or shoreline with clear waters for an easier start.

First up, grab the Chasing Go 2 application from the Google Play Store or Apple Store.

With the app installed, we'll connect everything. No ignition switch is needed here; simply ensure the drone is charged, and connect its power cable to the buoy, double-checking that the O-ring is in place. A beep will alert you that everything's a-okay.

The next step is to connect to the drone's wifi network, named "doryXXXXX." Once connected, open the app and let magic happen. If your smartphone isn't connected to the wifi when opening the app, just turn off your data and try again.

Now, you'll be able to see the drone's footage on your screen. You can even pair a Bluetooth remote control – just turn it on and select it. Upon connecting, throw it into the water for your first test: The Chasing Dory floats, so it'll rise to the surface if there are any complications or if the battery dies.

To submerge the drone, engage the motors by pressing the power button. From here, master the commands to descend and ascend, seeing the depth and temperature of the water. Navigate side by side or backward and forwards, adjust the lighting with a wheel or button, and tilt the drone to look up or down.

When tilted, the drone will lean forward or backward, requiring counter balancing. But all in all, it's quite simple to operate. Press the screen to change between responsive and stable modes. Of course, the drone allows you to capture photos or videos, later downloading them via Wi-Fi, and even live streaming video on the internet.

Operating at sea
