Expanded Global IoT Connectivity Options with Soracom's New "Connectivity Hypervisor" for Enhanced Flexibility and Control

Expands global IoT connectivity through launched "Connectivity Hypervisor," providing greater flexibility and control from Soracom.

Soracom, a global provider of advanced IoT connectivity solutions, is set to release the SORACOM Connectivity Hypervisor by the end of its 2025 fiscal year. This platform capability promises unprecedented flexibility and control over cellular connectivity, positioning itself as a foundational technology for scalable, regulatory-compliant, and operationally efficient IoT connectivity.

The Connectivity Hypervisor is designed to be compatible with Soracom’s new eUICC-compliant IoT SIMs that support GSMA SGP.32, the next-generation standard for remote SIM provisioning in IoT. This compatibility enables dynamic remote management and switching of multiple connectivity profiles on a single eSIM, including profiles issued by third-party mobile network operators.

Flexible and Efficient IoT Connectivity Management

The Connectivity Hypervisor contributes to flexible and efficient IoT connectivity management by allowing:

  • Multi-profile orchestration, including both Soracom and third-party mobile network operator (MNO) profiles.
  • Single-SKU global deployment, reducing logistical complexity and costs by enabling one hardware SKU capable of dynamic connectivity switching.
  • Compliance with permanent roaming regulations through dynamic switching to local carriers, avoiding regulatory issues associated with permanent roaming.
  • Connectivity optimization, supporting use-cases that require high-volume data or voice-enabled profiles.
  • Built-in redundancy, with fallback to Soracom’s own profile to ensure uninterrupted service.

Devices can automatically connect using a pre-installed Soracom profile upon activation and then switch to the most appropriate local or use-case-specific profile depending on deployment region or application needs.

A Step Towards a More Open, Flexible, and Resilient Global IoT Ecosystem

Soracom intends to act as a hypervisor for IoT connectivity, unifying profile management across operators to support a more open, flexible, and resilient global IoT ecosystem. The Connectivity Hypervisor is already being tested in live environments using eUICC, eIM, and SM-DP+ infrastructure, making it a significant step towards achieving this goal.

Toyota Motor Corporation is collaborating with Soracom under the Automotive Edge Computing Consortium (AECC) on a demonstration project called IRIGATE. The project explores stable, flexible connectivity for connected vehicles and validates SGP.32-based dynamic profile provisioning using the Connectivity Hypervisor.

In summary, Soracom’s Connectivity Hypervisor enhances IoT deployments by providing intelligent, dynamic control over global cellular connectivity, improving operational flexibility, compliance, and service reliability. It is a promising development for the future of IoT, paving the way for a more connected and efficient global ecosystem.
