Expanded parcel capacity secured for DHL at their $94M Barcelona air hub
DHL Express Opens New Sustainable Hub at Barcelona Airport
DHL Express has inaugurated a new international hub at Barcelona International Airport, marking a significant expansion in the company's European e-commerce logistics. The new hub, which was completed in less than two years, is part of a series of investments by DHL in Europe, following the opening of a $140M air facility in Lyons, France.
The Barcelona hub is designed with an infrastructure that allows for the expansion of charging capacity, ensuring at least two-thirds of the site's vehicles operate free of carbon emissions. The hub features 37 electric chargers for delivery vans and aircraft support equipment, a solar-array for electricity production, and a greywater recovery system. The warehouse facility connects air routes between Europe, America, and North Africa.
The hub serves more than 5,000 customers in Catalonia and will serve all four provinces in the region, the Balearic Islands, and Andorra. It operates 10 flights per day from its terminal at Barcelona airport, and plans to expand operations with the addition of two new in-network flights and enhanced intercontinental connectivity through commercial flights.
The hub also boasts 22 loading and unloading positions for air containers, as well as 24 docks for daily truck deliveries. It uses intelligent LED lighting with automatic programming and presence sensors to conserve energy. Tools for controlling and managing the hub's daily energy consumption are also implemented.
Spain plays a strategic role in the DHL Express global network due to its advanced logistics infrastructure and geographical location. In addition to the Barcelona hub, DHL Spain is planning to open a new operational facility in Girona this year. The company also recently relocated to a larger, more efficient gateway terminal at Helsinki airport, following a $117 million investment.
Moreover, DHL plans to invest $47 million in Vitoria to create the second-largest DHL Express aircraft maintenance hangar in Europe, expected to be operational in 2027. Amazon has also made several large investments in new and larger package logistics centers in Barcelona, Helsinki, and Lyon in recent months, highlighting the company's expansion and increased capacity in European e-commerce logistics.
The opening of the new hub in Barcelona underscores DHL's commitment to sustainability and innovation in the logistics industry. The company aims to reduce its carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. With the new Barcelona hub, DHL Express continues to lead the way in creating a more sustainable and efficient logistics network.
