Europe Ramps Up Lithium Battery Production for EVs, Despite Challenges
Europe is ramping up its lithium battery production for electric vehicles (EVs), with significant investments and projects underway. However, experts warn of challenges in supply chains, skills, and competition from China.
Buck Consultants International predicts the installation of 250 plants over the next decade. Meanwhile, France has secured a 10 billion euro investment for four gigafactories. The Automotive Cells Company (ACC) has raised 4.4 billion euros for three gigafactories across France, Germany, and Italy.
Germany leads Europe in lithium battery production capacity, with 151 GWh. Yet, concerns persist. Lars Carlstrom of Italvolt cautions about Europe's lack of supply chain, while Gert Jan Van der Have of Dekra highlights the skills gap in setting up production lines. Peter Willemsen of Gotion Global doubts Italy and Germany's gigafactory management abilities. Europe's dependence on China for sourcing, which accounts for 70% of global entry, also raises concerns.
Despite these challenges, Europe is committed to expanding its lithium battery production. Confirmed projects and substantial investments indicate a push towards self-sufficiency and reduced reliance on China. The next decade will be crucial in shaping Europe's role in the global EV battery market.
