Equatys Launches Global D2D Connectivity Venture

Equatys, a newly formed joint venture between Viasat and Space42, has announced an ambitious plan to provide direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity on a global scale. The venture aims to utilise a vast amount of L- and S-band spectrum, allocated across more than 160 countries, and will leverage both existing GEO fleets and new LEO satellites.

The Equatys venture is designed to be flexible and adaptable. It will accommodate spectrum beyond L- and S-band, allowing for future expansion. Furthermore, it will adopt a modular supply chain approach, enabling continuous technology upgrades. This approach is intended to foster innovation and interoperability within the connectivity ecosystem.

Equatys is positioning itself as a sovereignty-friendly D2D alternative. It has committed to working within existing national spectrum allocations, respecting the regulatory frameworks of each country. This approach is expected to facilitate the venture's global expansion.

The venture will operate under a cell tower-like investment model and a partner-led funding framework. It is open to other operators joining, aiming to expand coverage while reducing the total number of new satellites required. This collaborative approach is expected to accelerate the rollout of D2D services.

The announcement from Equatys comes in the wake of SpaceX's multibillion-dollar deal with EchoStar for D2D connectivity from LEO. This deal, along with the formation of Equatys, signals a growing interest in providing direct connectivity to devices worldwide.

Equatys, a joint venture between Viasat and Space42, is set to revolutionise global connectivity with its ambitious D2D plans. Leveraging a vast spectrum allocation and a modular, adaptable approach, Equatys aims to provide widespread, sovereignty-friendly connectivity within the next three years. Its collaborative, partner-led model is expected to accelerate the rollout of these services, bringing the world one step closer to truly global, direct-to-device connectivity.
