Rise in Car Registrations, Particularly Hybrid Models, Observed in July - Enhanced car registrations recorded in July, with a notable surge in hybrid vehicle registrations
Germany Sees a Shift Towards Electrified Vehicles in New Car Registrations
New data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) shows a significant change in Germany's new car market, with a growing preference for electrified vehicles.
In July 2025, hybrid vehicles, including plug-in hybrids, accounted for an impressive 38.7% of new registrations, with a total of 102,369 units registered[1][3]. This represents a notable increase from the previous year, with nearly two in every five new vehicles sold being hybrids.
Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) also saw a substantial increase, making up 18.4% of new registrations in July 2025, with 48,614 units registered[1][2][3]. This represents a 58% year-over-year increase.
On the other hand, traditional gasoline and diesel car registrations continue to decline sharply. Gasoline vehicle registrations fell by 24.1% to 67,921 units (28.4% market share), and diesel vehicles dropped 21.8% to 35,106 units (14.7% market share) in July 2025[4].
The popularity of electric cars is particularly noticeable in the new car registration data for July. Approximately 48,600 electric cars were registered, but the specific brands or models of electric cars registered in July are not specified[1].
Overall trends show that hybrids are growing strongly in market share and registrations, even outperforming BEVs in volume in recent months. BEVs are expanding rapidly but still hold a smaller share than hybrids. Gasoline and diesel registrations continue to decline as electrified models gain traction.
For the January to July 2025 period, hybrids made up 28.5% of all new car deliveries, up from 25.1% a year earlier, with registrations increasing by 10.7% to 475,138 units[5]. This suggests a strong and growing share of the market, reflecting Germany’s transition towards cleaner vehicles.
In summary, the KBA data reveals a marked shift in Germany’s new vehicle registrations away from traditional gasoline and diesel cars towards hybrid vehicles, with hybrids currently representing the largest single segment among new registrations, followed by growing BEV sales[1][4][5]. This trend is indicative of a broader global shift towards electrified vehicles as countries work towards reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change.

Community members may need to be aware of the updated community policy regarding the promotion of cleaner lifestyles, given the significant shift towards electrified vehicles in Germany's new car registrations.
The growing preference for electrified vehicles suggests an opportunity for vocational training programs to focus on the technology required for the repair and maintenance of electric and hybrid cars, as the number of these vehicles is expected to continue increasing.
