Elon Musk's Wealth Tops $500 Billion as SpaceX Loses Top Start-up Spot

Elon Musk's wealth has surged past the $500 billion mark this week, making him the first person to reach this milestone. Meanwhile, his rocket company SpaceX has lost its title as the world's most valuable start-up to OpenAI, valued at £375 billion.

Musk's fortune has seen a significant boost recently, thanks to Tesla stock's recovery. The electric vehicle maker's shares have doubled since March, although they are up only 13% so far this year after a slump at the start of 2025. This rebound comes after Musk quit his role in President Trump's administration and vowed to focus more on Tesla, contributing to the shares' resurgence.

Musk's business interests extend far beyond Tesla. He also owns 12% of the company, which is currently the world's most valuable car maker with a market capitalisation of over £1 trillion. His other ventures include artificial intelligence start-up xAI, valued at £150 billion, and ownership of X (formerly Twitter), The Boring Company, and Neuralink. However, the market capitalisations of these companies are not separately disclosed or are privately held, making it difficult to pinpoint Musk's exact wealth from these sources.

Despite SpaceX losing its title as the world's most valuable start-up, Musk's wealth continues to grow. With Tesla stock's recovery and his diverse business interests, he is on track to become the world's first trillionaire in the coming years. The Tesla board has also offered him a new pay deal worth up to $1 trillion over the next decade if certain targets are hit, further cementing his status as one of the world's most influential and wealthiest individuals.
