Elon Musk Makes Surprise Visit to Remote Canadian Town

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and X, recently made an unannounced trip to the small and remote town of Bella Bella, British Columbia. The visit, which drew attention due to the town's secluded location and Musk's high profile, appears to have been a private trip.

Bella Bella, with approximately 1,500 residents, is nestled in the Great Bear Rainforest and is known for luxury fishing resorts and private properties owned by wealthy individuals. This, along with the fact that Musk was accompanied by his son and arrived by a small private plane before being whisked away by helicopter, sparked speculation that he was visiting a private property near Bella Coola owned by James Murdoch, son of Rupert Murdoch and a Tesla board member.

However, no official public announcement was made about the specific purpose of Musk’s visit, and Tesla did not comment on the trip when contacted. The trip appears to have been personal rather than business-related, with no indication of official or public engagements during this visit.

Musk's passage through Bella Bella was considered significant by local resident Seaán Carter. The visit was a surprise, and Musk was seen walking a long way from the airport to his helicopter.

Musk's Canadian ties have been a topic of discussion in recent times. Born in South Africa, Musk moved to Saskatchewan and then Vancouver as a teen. He is a Canadian citizen through his mother, Maye Musk, who was born in Regina. In 2023, Musk posted a photo wearing a "I Love Canada" T-shirt and declared himself "half-Canadian". However, in February 2025, Musk tweeted "Canada is not a real country" before deleting the message.

The visit to Bella Bella comes at a time when decisions are being debated in Quebec, B.C., and other provinces to exclude Tesla from EV rebate programs in response to U.S. tariffs. The B.C. Premier, David Eby, cited "retaliation" as the reason for the decision.

Meanwhile, more than half of Canadian rural areas are buying services from Musk's Starlink satellite internet to improve connectivity.

CBC News confirmed that Musk's private jet touched down in Vancouver late Friday night and departed Monday afternoon. The details of Musk's visit to Bella Bella remain a mystery, but it is clear that the trip has added fuel to the ongoing debate about Musk's ties to Canada.
