Tesla CEO Elon Musk Steps Down from US Government Role

In a statement posted on the platform X, tech billionaire Elon Musk announced his departure from his role as a special government employee in the administration of President Donald Trump. Musk had been serving in the Trump-established Government Efficiency Office (GEO), with his tenure set to end on May 30, marking the conclusion of approximately 130 days in the position.

Musk expressed gratitude to Trump for the opportunity to trim government expenditure and highlighted the importance of GEO's mission in shaping the culture of the government. During his tenure, Musk's department reportedly made significant savings through various means, such as asset sales, contract cancellations, and a crackdown on fraudulent payments, totaling approximately $175 billion by May 26, equating to approximately $1,087 per taxpayer.

The departure followed a disagreement with Trump over a substantial spending bill, which Musk felt increased the budget deficit and hampered the work of the GEO. Despite ending his official role, Musk declared his intentions to continue advising the President on government efficiency initiatives.

The move allows Musk to focus more on his roles as CEO of Tesla and leader of SpaceX. Tesla experienced a 13% decline in global sales during the first quarter of the year, which Musk partially attributed to the demands of his government role. SpaceX, too, faced challenges with the failure of its ninth test flight of the Starship rocket on Tuesday.

Musk has faced criticism, particularly in Europe, for his support of far-right political forces. In Germany, he endorsed the far-right AfD party during the country's federal election campaign. Since Trump's return to the White House in January, Musk has been a driving force behind the GEO, aiming to accomplish significant cost and personnel cuts within the U.S. government apparatus.
