EllaLinkPlans to Construct a Subsea Cable Linking Mauritania to Europe, Slated for Completion by 2027
Mauritania is set to receive a significant boost in its international connectivity with the construction of a new Cable Landing Station in Nouadhibou, the second largest city in the country. This project is part of the EllaLink initiative, which aims to expand connectivity across geographies along its transatlantic route.
The new infrastructure will directly connect Mauritania to Madrid, Spain, providing the country with direct, cost-effective international connectivity up to European main exchanges. The subsea section of the new infrastructure will be built by Alcatel Submarine Networks and will include two fibre pairs, using state-of-the-art optical technologies.
The new EllaLink connection in Mauritania is expected to support the digital transformation of the country for the next 25 years. It will offer direct, cost-effective access to key internet exchanges in Europe, reinforcing Mauritania's international network. The new link will deliver an initial 200Gbps low latency direct circuit between Nouadhibou and Madrid.
The capacity of the new submarine cable in Mauritania is set to grow for the next 25 years, ensuring that the country's connectivity needs are met well into the future. The European Investment Bank and the CEF Digital program of the European Commission are supporting this project, reflecting its importance in fostering digital connections between Europe and Africa.
The construction of the new infrastructure has already begun, with a 500 km subsea cable being built to link Mauritania directly to Europe and Brazil. The project is expected to be ready for service by early 2027, although there may be some ancillary infrastructure timeline extending beyond this date, with the landing station in Nouadhibou becoming fully operational by 2028.
Philippe Dumont, CEO of EllaLink, expressed his enthusiasm about the new connection in Mauritania, stating that it will play a crucial role in the digital transformation of the country. EllaLink will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the new infrastructure, ensuring its reliability and efficiency for the long term.
In conclusion, the EllaLink project is a significant step forward in enhancing Mauritania's international connectivity. The new submarine cable will reinforce the country's network, reducing the risk of disruption to the Mauritanian economy, and supporting the digital transformation of the country for the next 25 years.
