Drone Disruptions at German Airports Surge, Threatening National Security
Drone disruptions at German airports have surged in recent years, posing significant threats to national security and economic stability. By the end of August 2025, nationwide incidents had reached a staggering 144, more than doubling the 99 recorded in 2023. The Reserve Association has called for Baden-Württemberg to develop its own strategy to combat these threats.
Airport staff and pilots have been the primary reporters of these illegal drone flights. Stuttgart Airport, for instance, has experienced six such incidents in 2025 alone. However, other major airports like Frankfurt, Cologne/Bonn, and Düsseldorf have seen even more disruptions. The Minister of the Interior plans to address this issue at the upcoming Interior Ministers' Conference.
The proximity of drones to airports is a critical concern. Flights within 1.5 kilometers are strictly prohibited, carrying penalties of up to ten years imprisonment. Despite these strict laws, drone flights continue to pose risks to air traffic and public safety. Generalinspekteur Carsten Breuer has shown interest in deploying new weapons systems to defend against these threats.
The sharp increase in drone disruptions at airports underscores the urgent need for robust defense strategies. Baden-Württemberg's plans to address this issue at the Interior Ministers' Conference are a step in the right direction. With potential penalties for illegal drone flights being severe, it is crucial for the public to adhere to these regulations to ensure the safety of all.
